Appleton alderman wants to rename Jackman Street

Alderman Joe Martin wants to rename portions of Jackman and Drew streets near the city’s riverfront for ease of navigation.jackman

South Jackman extends down a hill for about a block leading to Fratellos restaurant before turning into Water Street. On the eastern end of Water, the street goes back up the hill and becomes South Drew Street near Lawrence University.

Martin wants the full section of road between State Street and College Avenue to become Water Street after reconstruction in 2015.

“There is no conflict with owners of these addresses and it makes it easier to navigate near the riverfront,” Martin said.

Jackman was named after a Grand Chute hotel owner near the turn of the century, but has no remaining historic value, Martin said.

The city’s plan commission voted to move forward with the plan, and notify residents by mail. If more than half the owners oppose the street renaming, the plan will be shot down.
