Paper Discovery Center features paper sculpture exhibit, book festival events

A traveling exhibit of cut paper sculpture now is open in the first-floor gallery at the Paper Discovery Center in Appleton.

“Power Seeker,” a collection of works by mixed media artist Michael Velliquette, will be on display through May at the Paper Discovery Center, 425 W. Water Street.

An Appleton Downtown Inc. Octoberfest Grant financially supports the exhibit.

The Paper Discovery Center is open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Saturday. Admission costs $5 for adults, $4 for senior citizens, $3 for students and $12 for families.

It is free for Paper Discovery Center members.

During the Fox Cities Book Festival in April, Velliquette plans to lead a discussion of his book, “Michael Velliquette: Lairs of the Unconscious.” The book is available for purchase at the Paper Discovery Center.

The book discussion begins at 11 a.m. April 20 at the Paper Discovery Center. There is no fee for the event.

Velliquette, a faculty associate in the art department at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, is known for his densely detailed and dimensionally complex paper sculptures.

After the book discussion, Velliquette is scheduled to lead “Rockin’ Paper and Scissors: Paper Crafting Workshop with Michael Velliquette.”

Workshop participants learn the fundamentals of paper crafting and experiment with diverse approaches to paper construction and collage techniques. There is a $25 workshop fee. Pre-registration is required.
