Today, downtown Appleton welcomed its first day of Street Music Week.

The music infused fundraiser for Feeding America Eastern Wisconsin began today (June 10) and runs through Thursday (June 14). This is the first year Appleton has participated in the event, which began in Spokane, Wash. in 2003.

The premise of the event is simple: performers show up to Heid Music in downtown Appleton on any of the participating days, pick up a collection bucket at noon and find a spot on the street to perform.

At 1 p.m., participants return the buckets to Heid Music, along with any donations they received during their one-hour street performances. All street performers are welcome, from musicians to jugglers, with all proceeds benefiting Feeding America.

Over 25 performers graced the streets of downtown Appleton today and attendance is expected to grow throughout the week.

Appleton resident Audrey Hendrickson, who is a drummer and employee at Heid Music in downtown Appleton, pioneered the Appleton chapter of Street Music Week.
